A ship agent is a key figure in the world of maritime transport. It is a person or company that acts as an intermediary between the shipowner and the shipper or consignee of the cargo. Its role is essential to ensure that the transport process runs smoothly and efficiently.

What are the main tasks of ship agents?

The tasks of a ship agent are very diverse, ranging from managing the loading and unloading of the ship to coordinating the documentation needed for transport. The most notable tasks of an agent include:

  • Receiving and sending loading and unloading orders: The agent is responsible for receiving the ship’s loading and unloading orders and coordinating the operation with the port terminals and carriers.
  • Logistics coordination: The agent is also in charge of coordinating transport logistics, from storage and distribution of the cargo to land transport and customs management.
  • Documentation and customs procedures: The agent must make sure that all the documentation needed for transport is in order, from the cargo manifest to customs permits.
  • Safety supervision: The agent is responsible for the safety of the cargo during transport, which includes supervising the storage and handling conditions of the cargo.
  • Problem solving: In case of problems in transport, the agent is in charge of finding solutions to minimise the effects and keep the transport flowing.

To better understand the role of the ship agent, we can give an example. Suppose a company in the United States needs to transport a shipment of goods to Spain. The agent would be responsible for:

  • Receiving the ship’s loading and unloading order at the port of origin.
  • Coordinating the cargo logistics, including storage and distribution.
  • Making sure that all the necessary documentation is in order, including the cargo manifest and customs permits.
  • Supervising the safety of the cargo during sea transport.
  • Coordinating land transport and customs management at the port of destination.

As can be seen, the role of the agent is essential to ensure that the transport process is carried out efficiently and safely.

From an insurance point of view, the ship agent also faces a number of risks that must be taken into account. Some of the main risks an agent faces are:

  • Damage to the cargo during transport: If the cargo is damaged during transport, the agent may be held liable and be the subject of claims.
  • Legal liability: The agent may be liable for any damage occurring during transport, whether to the cargo or to third parties.
  • Loss of income: If transport is delayed or cancelled, the agent may lose income and face claims from clients.
