Car insurance, and therefore motorbike insurance, can be classified into several types, depending on the cover they offer. Some of the most common types of car insurance are described below:

    1. Third-party insurance: This is the most basic type of car insurance and covers only damage or injury that the vehicle’s driver may cause to other people or property. It does not include damage to the driver’s own vehicle or to their passengers.
    2. Third-party insurance extended: This type of insurance includes the cover of third-party insurance, but also covers damage caused by road accidents, theft, fire and other risks.
    3. Comprehensive insurance: This is the most complete type of insurance and covers both damage caused to third parties and damage to the driver’s own vehicle, regardless of who is responsible for the accident. It also usually includes roadside assistance and home assistance, among other additional options.

Comprehensive policies may or may not include a deductible, which is an amount the policyholder must pay in the event of a claim before the insurance covers the rest of the damage. In general, comprehensive policies with a deductible tend to be cheaper than those without, as the insurer assumes less risk.

There are countless differences between the policies of one insurer and another, and even between different variants of policies from the same insurer.

Some of the most important covers, which are not always analysed in detail, are:

    • Sum insured for driver’s death and disability.
    • Weather damage and damage from game animals.
    • Free choice of workshops.
    • Replacement value of the vehicle: some insurers offer an additional percentage on top of the vehicle’s market value before the accident.
    • Travel assistance: it deserves a whole chapter to describe the big differences there can be between different insurers and policies.
    • Etc.

In addition, of course, to differences beyond the covers, in the service, such as:

    1. Waiting times for a response from the call centre and the claims handlers.
    2. The agreements with their loss adjusters and mechanics.
    3. The interest of law firms in defending policyholders’ rights, for example when disputing the value of a vehicle that has been declared a total loss against the insurer of the party at fault, or when defending an occupant’s injuries in a claim.
    4. The ability to listen to arguments when the interests of the insurer and those of the client clash or the right answer lies in a “grey” area.
    5. Connectivity with the different systems of insurers, mechanics, brokers, etc.
    6. Participation in agreements between insurers or claims registers (TIREA, SINCO).
